Chinese companies to modernise Ethiopia’s transport sector

Under the first agreement valued at $15 million, 110 buses from China’s leading bus maker, Yutong, will be procured within eight months. As per the second deal, the city will modernise its transport system, integrate digital systems among other upgrades at a cost of $14.17 million.

The Ethiopian government has been investing in the transport and logistics sector with a view to strengthen the economic and social development of the country. The government has a 10-year transport sector development plan for the construction of road and rail projects. The country plans to expand its road network to 1,600 kilometres from the current 301 kilometres. It has already built expressways such as Addis Ababa – Adama, Modjo – Hawassa, and Dere Dawa -Dewele.

 Road Infrastructure Planning Team Head at the Ethiopian Road Fund, Sadiya Beshir said that the government plans to increase the total length of the express highways in the country to 1,600 kilometres over the coming ten years.

 To strengthen regional integration, it plans to build additional road infrastructure to connect the country with Djibouti, Eritrea, and Sudan. Sea- Air links between Ethiopia and Djibouti will get a boost  by the recent partnership agreement between Ethiopian Airlines (ET), Air Djibouti and International Djibouti Industrial Park Operation (IDIPO).

In another development, Chief Administrator of Amhara Regional State, Yilikal Kefale urged the Chinese government to extend its support to rebuild infrastructures and institutions destroyed during the ongoing fighting between Tigray rebels and government forces.
