About 36 million US dollars, at current exchange rates of Mozambique’s debt to China has been waived off by the Chinese government. This accounts for 1.7 per cent of the total debt of 150 billion meticais, Mozambique owes to China. An agreement to this effect was signed in Maputo last week by Foreign Minister Veronica Macamo and Chinese ambassador Wang Hejun.
Speaking about the agreement, ambassador Macamo stated that China has been extending its support to Mozambique in its fight against Covid-19. Mozambique was among the first countries to receive the VeroCell vaccine against the Covid-19 respiratory disease. He added that the Chinese government donated 200,000 doses of Sinopharm vaccine, last month for Mozambican health professionals.
Another agreement on economic and technical cooperation was also signed between China and Mozambique. Under the agreement, China will grant Mozambique 1.6 billion meticais to finance a variety of economic and social projects. The Grant is expected to promote Mozambique’s efforts for sustainable and inclusive socio-economic development.
