China is keen to expand the sale of African agricultural products across its e-commerce platforms. This was stated by Wu Peng, Director General of Chinese Department of African Affairs at a launch ceremony of African Products. He also remarked that China has never wanted to have a trade surplus with Africa. This online trade with Africa would help Africans to sell more agricultural products to China, thereby filling the trade gap.
China will encourage e-commerce through live streaming platforms that offer agricultural products from the continent. The new initiative will coincide with the new China – Africa Cooperation forum meeting to be held in Senegal at the end of 2021.
The bilateral trade between China and Africa reached US$139.1 billion in the first seven months of the year. Of this, imports from Africa were US$59.3 billion.
