The Chinese embassy in Kenya has refuted the allegations that its agencies have hacked the websites of key Kenyan agencies. According to reports published by a wire agency, the hacking was done to assess whether Kenya would service billions of dollars owed to Beijing.

The report published recently by the wire agency says that the years-long cyber-attacks started in 2019 when the Chinese started closing credit taps to Kenya as debt strains started showing. However, in a tweet, the Chinese embassy said the report was far-fetched and sheer nonsense.

The embassy said it was a highly sensitive political issue to blame a certain government for a cyber-attack without solid evidence and said that China also was subjected to hacking by unscrupulous people. The Chinese embassy officials stated that the ties between Kenya and China are founded on mutual respect. Kenya has reportedly cut borrowing from China. As of March, it owed the south-eastern Asian country US$6.31bn (£5.8bn).
