China Moves to Fast-Track Zero-Tariff Access for Nigerian Goods as Both Nations Deepen 55-Year Strategic Partnership

(3 Minutes Read)

China has signalled a major boost to Nigeria’s export ambitions by announcing its readiness to accelerate the implementation of a zero-tariff policy for Nigerian goods—well ahead of the previously expected schedule. The announcement was made in Abuja by China’s ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, who emphasized that Beijing is prepared to open its market more rapidly to Nigerian products as part of a renewed push to strengthen bilateral trade ties.

The decision was revealed during a high-level meeting between Ambassador Yu and Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar. Their discussions focused on expanding trade, enhancing strategic cooperation, and aligning long-term development objectives as the two countries mark 55 years of diplomatic relations. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening collaboration in key sectors such as manufacturing, investment, and industrial development.

Ambassador Yu noted that the China–Nigeria comprehensive strategic partnership has entered what he described as a “fast track,” guided by policy directions outlined in the Chinese Communist Party’s recommendations for the upcoming 15th Five-Year Plan. He stressed that the early rollout of zero-tariff arrangements would foster greater trust between the two nations and deliver tangible economic benefits to citizens in both countries. Yu also highlighted China’s ongoing dedication to high-standard opening-up initiatives aimed at promoting shared global prosperity.

Foreign Minister Tuggar welcomed the move, describing China as one of Nigeria’s most crucial strategic partners. He acknowledged Beijing’s longstanding role in supporting Nigeria’s social and economic advancement and reaffirmed Nigeria’s adherence to the One China principle. Tuggar added that Nigeria intends to synchronize its development strategy with China’s and hopes to expand cooperation in trade, manufacturing, and investment in the coming years.

China’s decision comes at a time of broader outreach to African economies. Earlier this year, Beijing granted zero-tariff access across all tariff lines to 33 African nations with which it maintains diplomatic relations. Fast-tracking similar concessions for Nigeria—Africa’s largest economy—positions the country to benefit more directly from China’s expanding trade incentives. The announcement also coincides with preparations for the 2026 China–Africa Year of Cultural Exchanges, marking a renewed effort to reinforce economic and cultural ties across the continent.

Overall, the accelerated zero-tariff initiative represents a strategic milestone in China–Nigeria relations, signalling deeper cooperation, expanded trade opportunities, and a shared vision for long-term development and prosperity.
