According to a Press release from the Presidency office of DR Congo, China has agreed to cancell a part of DRC’s debt to China. The move reportedly is to support DRC to fight the coronavirus epidemic.
Foreign Minister of China Wang Yi during his recent visit to DRC announced that 180 million yuan ($28 million) will be put back into government coffers. He also offered a further $15 million to support wider development efforts. It is estimated that China, the top investor in the country, has extended more than $2.4 billion in loans over the past two decades to DRC. The first coronavirus cases were reported in DRC on March 10.Since then DR Congo has officially registered 18,738 cases and 610 deaths.
