In a high-level diplomatic engagement underscoring the growing strategic partnership between China and Africa, Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun called for an expansion of military ties with South Africa. The remarks came during a meeting with General Rudzani Maphwanya, Chief of the South African National Defence Force, held in the Chinese capital.

According to China’s state news agency Xinhua, Minister Dong emphasised the importance of strengthening bilateral military cooperation, describing the China-South Africa defense relationship as a key pillar of their broader strategic partnership. He reiterated China’s commitment to advancing multilateralism and resisting what he described as hegemonic practices and bullying by global powers.

“China is ready to work with South Africa to uphold the principles of multilateral cooperation, resist hegemonic behaviours and power politics, and jointly prevent the emergence of division and confrontation in international affairs,” Dong said, according to the report.

General Maphwanya, leading the South African delegation, expressed appreciation for China’s longstanding support of the South African military. He acknowledged the value of China’s contributions to South Africa’s defense capabilities and said his country is committed to strengthening cooperation in a number of practical domains.

“We look forward to deepening collaboration with the Chinese military through joint exercises, advanced training, personnel exchange, defense education, and maritime security initiatives,” Maphwanya stated.

The meeting reflects a broader trend of increasing military and economic engagement between China and African nations, particularly within frameworks such as the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). It also signals China’s continued efforts to cultivate influence across the Global South as part of its geopolitical and security ambitions.

While specific agreements were not publicly disclosed, analysts suggest that the talks may pave the way for expanded joint operations, naval collaboration in the Indian Ocean, and broader defense industry exchanges. The meeting is part of a series of recent diplomatic interactions that highlight Beijing’s strategy to counterbalance Western influence by fostering robust partnerships across Africa and other regions.
