Children in Chad need urgent attention to address malnutrition and healthcare

 Children are among the growing numbers of infants suffering from malnutrition in Chad. The land-locked country in the Sahel region is the third poorest nation in the world, according to the United Nations. Chad ranked 113 out of 116 nations on the “Global Hunger Index”.

Chad’s population of 15 million, around 5.5 million, including 2.7 million children, are in need of humanitarian assistance this year, according to UNICEF.

  Poverty has aggravated mainly because of security reasons. The breakdown in law and order and sporadic violence have forced farming families to leave their fields. They were exposed to extreme weather conditions and for the last two years were  impacted  by the Covid-19 pandemic. Estimates show 52 percent of the population live below the poverty line. Also, the country has a high rate of child mortality mainly due to malnutrition
