Chad’s COVID-19 vaccination campaign has started off. This was kicked off by the Minister of Health and other members of the ministry by receiving their shot. Thereafter, reports say, Chadians lined up to receive the jab. China’s Sinopharm has provided the jab. The batch of Sinoharm arrived earlier in the week.
The priority is to vaccinate religious pilgrims over the age 65, military troops and health personnel. Chad has launched a campaign to sensitize the masses to go for vaccination to address the likely resistance from some sections of the population. The upshot of the campaign was to relate to the people that the infection will not discriminate against people.
Chad, as of now, has reported 4.938 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 174 deaths, very less cases as compared to world average and lesser in terms of incidences of infection reported in some other countries in Africa. However, the World Health Organization is maintaining a close scrutiny of cases in the continent. Of late, many countries have come forward to manufacture vaccines to meet the requirement of the continent and surplus exporting to countries in Middle East rather than depending on imports from other parts of the world.
African Union is taking interest in building local manufacturing capacities. Countries like Egypt, South Africa etc have already taken measures to locally manufacture the serum and towards that they are building supply chains for movement of vaccines.
