Over 680,000 Sudanese refugees have crossed over to Chad, fleeing the war zone. In the last month alone, 60,000 new refugees arrived; the UN High Commissioner for Refugees said this week.
The vast majority of the new arrivals are women and children, many reach the border after walking for long distances before entering neighbouring Chad. Every person fleeing Sudan has a sordid story to narrate: how they escaped narrowly from death, valuable things they have lost, health hazards they are facing, etc, as Chad is facing the pangs of a heavy influx of refugees.
The United Nations terms the influx as the biggest crisis the resource crunch country is facing. Refugees arrive in a country with limited resources. The country’s weak economy and poor infrastructure grapple with conflict, climate crisis, and food insecurity.
