Central African Republic’s citizens hold demonstrations supporting Russian aggression in Ukraine

  • Close to hundred people participated in Bangui, the capital of Central African Republic on Saturday , in a demonstration in support of Russia in its offensive against Ukraine

Close to hundred people participated in Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic on Saturday , in a demonstration in support of Russia in its offensive against Ukraine. Protesters have waved Russian and Central African flags, and chanted slogans in support of Russia, while participating in the demonstrations held at the foot of a statue as a symbolic gesture.

The statue was inaugurated in late 2021 by  CAR President Faustin Archange Touadéra. It represents Russian fighters protecting a woman and her children. Located at a central place in the capital, near the university, the statue represents the growing cordiality between Russia and CAR.

President Touadéra called on Moscow to rescue his impoverished and poorly trained army to cope up with the rebellion faced by the country more than a year ago.  In the process, hundreds of Russian paramilitaries were added to the existing force, which had been positioned  in the central African country some three years ago. They had pushed back the armed groups that were then occupying two-thirds of the country. Besides, they recovered the vast majority of the territory, which were occupied by the militant group.

The Russian interference is considered as human rights violations by the UN. The UN considers that the Russian mercenaries, belonging to a private agency called Wagner  are involved in “massacres” and the “execution” of civilians. At a recent vote at the United Nations General Assembly of a text that “demanded that Russia immediately cease the use of force against Ukraine,” the Central African Republic abstained along with 35 other countries including China, India and Pakistan.
