The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), as a part of its effort to strengthen the public healthcare system, has announced innovative schemes for financing of research and development in new and improved drugs, vaccines, and diagnostics for detecting infectious diseases in Nigeria.
The guideline titled “Healthcare Sector Research and development Intervention Scheme (HSRDIS)” is designed to trigger intense national R& D activities which will include R&D of candidate drugs, herbal medicines and vaccines to develop a Nigerian treatment for the Covid-19 and other infectious diseases.
Activities that are eligible for grant under the scheme include manufacturing of drugs, vaccines etc which can be used for treatment or prevention of Covid-19 and other infectious diseases. It also promotes collaborative research between academia and industry, evolving new technologies for the control and treatment of infectious diseases etc.
