Cashless toll payment has become a reality in Lagos. Lagos State Government recently introduced the cashless policy for toll payments at Lekki/ Ikoyi Link bridge toll- plaza. Earlier in 2019, the government had announced that it would go cashless on toll payments at the Lekki/ Ikoyi toll plaza effective from 1st January 2020. This was necessitated by a huge traffic block experienced while the traffic used to inch on account of payment of toll manually (through cash).
The new cashless policy is expected to reduce traffic queue length often experienced during the cash payments regime. It will also bring about significant improvement in vehicular movement at the toll plaza. Smelling that cashless toll collection may require education of the public on its merits, the government has appealed to the public to comply with it since it would considerably ease the flow of traffic and catalyse trade and industry.
The government is keeping a watch on the cashless toll system since some motorists are trying to deliberately sabotage the new policy for their selfish gains. There are incidences of some motorists duplicating payment vouchers for multiple uses. According to government sources, no motorists spent more than one to two seconds before they were electronically passed, having shown their e- payment vouchers or other devices.
