Casablanca is the leading North African city in the  Global Cities Index 2024 by Oxford Economics. The city has been ranked 442nd out of 1,000 cities in the latest ranking. The ranking evaluates cities worldwide based on five key criteria: economic power, human capital, quality of life, environmental integrity, and governance effectiveness.

According to the index, Casablanca, Morocco’s economic capital, excels particularly in human capital and environmental quality. It ranks 287th in human capital, reflecting a strong educational and business climate, and 225th in environmental quality, indicating a relatively healthy natural environment in terms of climate change-related issues.

The city ranks 713th in quality of life, which assesses residents’ well-being, financial and health outcomes, and access to amenities. In addition, it ranks 562nd in governance, which evaluates political stability and the protection of residents’ rights at a national level.

The Global Cities Index also features several other Moroccan cities.  Rabat, the political capital, ranks 504th, standing out with a respectable economic score at 438th place and an exceptional environmental rating at the 156th position, though it also struggles with governance in the 562nd position.

Meanwhile, Tangier, placed 631st overall, faces difficulties with a fragile economy and limited human capital, both ranked 727th, but benefits from a top-tier environmental score in the 130th place.
