The Central African Republic’s supreme court has cancelled plans for a committee to rewrite the constitution. The decision by the apex court is a setback for President Faustin-Archange Touadera, amidst reports that he is seeking a third term in office.

The court said a referendum on changing the constitution could be triggered by the president.  But the court insisted that the president could not act against the oath he had taken when elected in 2020. In the oath, the president pledged he would not attempt to change the number and length of his mandates.

The 65 -year-old president was first elected in 2016, then re-elected in a controversial poll in 2020.  On August 27, demonstrators took place in the capital city Bangui against changing the constitution. Touadera won his second term with a 53.16 percent vote share amid widespread insecurity in the CAR. Only very few people could take part in the election process in the country, which is the world’s second least developed nation.
