The Central African livestock market situated in capital city Bangui of Central African Republic (CAR) is one of the most important in the region for cattle trade. This is the important livestock market not alone for CAR but also for neighbouring countries like Chad and Sudan.
The lesser-known fact about the market is that this is one of the important segments of the CAR’s economy. Many young people make their living from this trade either by selling the cattle or by transporting cattle to destinations. Meat trade is also a source of occupation for many. For the government also, cattle trade brings more resources to its exchequer because both sellers and buyers pay taxes. The taxes are paid for each animal. According to some estimates, taxes are estimated at several million CFA francs per month.
The Ministry of Livestock officials point out that the livestock sector contributes 45% to the poultry GDP and 15% to the national GDP. Once the cattle reach the slaughter house, it is examined by the officials to test the hygiene and to see whether the animal is free from any disease. The restrictions imposed by the government help in providing good and hygienic meat to the people.
