Agitations are taking place in Central African Republic. Some 44 rebels were killed while they were trying to blockade the capital Bangui. Reports say that the police authorities were trying to overthrow the authorities in power and the police had to engage them to prevent the violence from spreading.

The rebels were protesting the re-election held on Dec. 27, when President Faustin-Archange Touadera was elected. They say he was elected using fraudulent methods. The rebels say that they would take the capital. They had also taken towns in other parts of the country before the election. There is a state of emergency since January 22 in CAR imposed to stem further violence.

The army and UN forces are trying to push back the rebel groups. However, the anti-government fighters, who now control two-thirds of the country, have surrounded the capital. The country is presently going through a very difficult period. The UN also endorses that view. The needle of suspicion is on former President François Bozizé, who was blocked from running in the election, for triggering violence, though he denied the allegations. The CAR army was supported by forces
from Rwanda, Russia, France and the United Nations. The tension has also resulted in displacement of over 100,000 people.
