Supporters of Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi held national flags and chanted slogans during an election campaign rally outside the Cairo University campus in Giza apparently supporting his likely bid for re-election.  Sisi is widely expected to announce his re-election bid soon, political analysts say.

Egypt’s election commission said presidential elections would be held in December, months ahead than it was earlier scheduled. Candidates will submit their bids in October, which will be followed by campaigns from November 9 to 29.

Sisi was elected for the first time in 2014 and was re-elected in 2018.  His detractors say that on both occasions, the elections were not free and fair, a fact endorsed by independent observers.  Amidst these developments, the Northern African country is undergoing harrowing experiences in terms of high inflation and high incidence of unemployment.
