Cameroon has launched its new national passport production centre in Yaoundé, which will produce biometric passports in 48 hours once the online registration of the applicant is made. The first 80 passports were issued recently by the Cameroonian police chief. Earlier, applicants had to wait between 6 months and 2 years to obtain a passport.

However, the speed entails cost.  The cost of new passports has gone up from CFAF 75,000 (Euro 116) to CFAF 110,000 (Euro 170), making it one of the most expensive passports in Africa. Citizens are seemingly happy since they need not have to wait for long years to get the passport and that too with some quality and finesse.

The Cameroonian passport currently ranks on the 91st place in the pecking order of Guide Passport Ranking Index. It is down in ranking since it gives visa-free access to only 49 destinations across the world. With the new infrastructure in place, between 1500 to 2000 passports can be produced each day at this new center. The government is keen to set up centers in each of the 10 regions of Cameroon where the passports can be collected at convenience by successful applicants.
