Burundi’s parliament has unanimously appointed Security Minister Gervais Ndirakobuca as the new Prime Minister. In a national broadcast, it was announced that he has replaced Alain Guillaume Bunyoni who was the Prime Minister for the last two years. The announcement came soon after President Evariste Ndayishimiye warned of a plot to destabilise him.

Burundi has a turbulent history of presidential assassinations, coups, ethnic massacres and a long civil war that ended in 2006 that left 300000 thousand dead. Ndayishimiye came to power in June 2020 after his predecessor Pierre Nkurunziza died of heart failure according to  the Burundian authorities. Burundi went through violent turmoil in 2015 when Nkurunziza tried to remain in power for a third term in office. In 2015, the newly appointed PM Ndirakobuca came under US sanctions for oppressing the opponents to Nkurunziza’s third term bid.
