Burkina Faso’s junta chief and new self-proclaimed leader, Ibrahim Traore, met with cabinet officials recently (Sunday) following the military coup, while former junta leader Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba offered his resignation, after his talks with the new leader.
The new leader called upon everyone to move fast and avoid the red tape that had eaten the vitals of the economy. Sectors like security, defence, health, social action, infrastructure, etc should engage urgent attention to take the country forward, he added.

Recently, hundreds of people rallied in the capital, Ouagadougou, seeking Damiba’s departure. They also demanded the end of France’s military presence in the Sahel and military cooperation with Russia. Importantly, this is the second time in less than one year that Burkina Faso has had a change in leadership as more than 40% of Burkina Faso remains outside government control.
