Russia’s state nuclear corporation, Rosatom, and Burkina Faso signed a roadmap at the 2024 Atomexpo International Forum for developing cooperation on nuclear energy.75 countries worldwide gathered in the Russian federal territory of Sirius on the Black Sea coast to take part in the 2024 Atomexpo International Forum on nuclear energy. Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and Iraq are participating in Atomexpo for the first time. Atomexpo is the largest international forum on nuclear energy devoted to the current state of the global nuclear industry and trends for its further development.

The roadmap has a certain number of components. First, about the training component, the public opinion component, and the infrastructure component, the Burkinabe Minister of Energy, Mines and Quarries Yacouba Zabré Gouba Then, in the coming months, it will be a matter of developing an agreement which sets the normative framework for cooperation between Rosatom and Burkina Faso.

According to the roadmap, the construction of a nuclear power plant is planned in Burkina Faso, the minister disclosed. The establishment of this power plant will initially help reduce the energy deficit and eventually all sectors of Burkina Faso’s socio-economic life. There will be discussions to see whether this collaboration should be continued,” concluded the senior official. However, he said he is confident about the possibility of reaching an agreement to make this project a reality. Burkina Faso believes that Russia, with the experience it has, will be able to support the country towards its energy independence better, Gouba noted.

Rosatom plays an important role in the context of developing technologies that play a role in the energy supply of the future. And not only within its own country but also in a global sense. “I have had the opportunity to personally visit some of the well-known projects developed by ‘Rosatom’. Projects come to my mind that ‘Rosatom’ is implementing in Turkey, Egypt, Bangladesh, and many other countries. These are significant achievements at the international level”, stated Rafael Grossi, the head of the IAEA.
