Burkina Faso President Roch Marc Christian Kabore is on an official visit in Brussels and met senior European Union officials. The meeting was aimed at strengthening socio-economic partnership, security and health cooperation between Burkina Faso and the EU.
Among others, Kabore met in EU included European Council President Charles Michel and European Parliament President David Sassoli. Even though Burkina Faso remained, by and large, unscathed from the pandemic, what is worrying the country is the insurgencies that surface out sporadically affecting its growth path.
Jihandism has mostly spread to Burkina Faso from Mali and Niger. It began in Mali in 2012 and soon spread to other countries. Roch Marc Christian Kabore just began his five year term as the president. Later, the President will meet his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron at the Elysée Palace in Paris.
Despite Burkina Faso’s relatively strong macroeconomic profile,r oughly 44 % of the population lives below the poverty line. It is more pronounced in rural areas estimated at of 51% compared to 20%in urban areas. In the North and East of the regions of the country, poverty is more pronounced. The country has a low export base.
