Some of the bigwigs who will attend the summit are China’s Xi Jinping, Brazil’s Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and Iran’s Masoud Pezeshkian. Invitations were sent to 38 states including member states and countries that “want to cooperate” with BRICS, Ushakov said at a news briefing in Moscow.

Twenty-four leaders have confirmed their participation in a summit of the BRICS bloc of developing economies set to be held in Kazan later this month, according to Yuri Ushakov, the Russian President’s foreign affairs adviser. Amongst them will be heads of state of nine BRIC countries.

The BRICS alliance was founded in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining in 2010. The bloc has undergone a major expansion and now includes Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. Saudi Arabia has said it’s considering joining and Azerbaijan has formally applied.

Importantly, BRICS Ministers of Health have been invited to speak to the students of the Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University on the topic of ‘BRICS for Future Generations: Overcoming Modern Challenges and Threats to Healthcare’.

The 14th Meeting of BRICS Ministers of Health will host discussions on the challenges and threats facing healthcare in BRICS, as well as the outlook for cooperation in such new areas as nuclear medicine, combatting antimicrobial resistance, public health, the establishment of a BRICS Medical Journal and BRICS Medical Association, the creation of an Integrated Early Warning System for Preventing the Risk of Mass Infectious Diseases in BRICS, the BRICS Tuberculosis Research Network and BRICS Vaccine Centre, and regulatory cooperation. The meeting will end with the adoption of a joint declaration.
