Botswana is known for diamonds. The southern African country takes credit for building a resilient, conflict-free, and ethical diamond industry. It has different ways to promote the booming diamond industry. One way is through the medium of philately.

The Diamonds of Botswana definitive stamp issue was wholly sponsored by Debswana Diamond Company at a combined value of P950 000. This was revealed by the Managing Director of Debswana, Andrew Motsomi. BotswanaPost’s 12th Definitive Stamps Project was launched at the Adrian Gale Museum in Orapa recently.

According to Motsomi, BotswanaPost approached Debswana with the proposal of forging a partnership to promote Botswana diamonds and the idea resonated with Debswana’s historic contribution to national development and current 2024 Strategy. Debswana partnered with BotswanaPost in 2001 to issue a stamp that showcased jewelry as a by-product of Botswana’s diamonds. This has helped the company in several ways, Motsomi said.

The integrity of Botswana diamonds is highly appreciated and withstood challenges against lab-grown diamonds. Also, while other diamond-rich countries are facing challenges such as global conflicts and political instability, Botswana is resilient and stable, telling the world that diamond mining in the country is ethical and conflict-free. That has helped the country to emerge as an upper middle-income nation, he remarked.

The BotswanaPost and Debswana’s collaboration will also present the world’s philatelic community with an opportunity to learn about Botswana whilst doing something that they love the most – collecting stamps. The stamps will be showcased to Botswana and around the world for the next five years, thus giving great exposure not only to the company but to the country as well.
