Minister for State President Moeti Mohwasa has hailed Russia’s recent offer to train young Botswana diplomats in Moscow in 2026, calling it a powerful symbol of the enduring friendship and deepening cooperation between the two nations.

Mohwasa made these remarks during the celebration of Russia Day in Gaborone. Addressing dignitaries and guests at the event, he expressed Botswana’s appreciation for Russia’s long-standing support across key sectors such as education, health, engineering, military training, and diplomacy.

“The proposal to train our young diplomats in Moscow is a significant gesture that reflects the strength of our bilateral relationship,” Mohwasa stated. “It demonstrates Russia’s commitment to investing in Botswana’s future and helping us build a well-prepared and globally aware diplomatic corps.”

The offer comes at a time when international cooperation in diplomacy is more crucial than ever. The training initiative is expected to provide Botswana’s emerging diplomats with critical skills, international exposure, and a deeper understanding of global governance and foreign policy—a move that aligns with Botswana’s broader vision of nurturing world-class leaders and strengthening its global presence.

Russian Ambassador to Botswana, His Excellency Andrey Kemarskiy, also addressed the gathering, underlining the rich history of bilateral ties that spans 55 years. He reiterated Russia’s commitment to further enhancing collaboration with Botswana in strategic areas such as energy, mining, healthcare, and higher education.

“For more than five decades, Botswana and Russia have enjoyed a respectful, mutually beneficial relationship,” Ambassador Kemarskiy said. “We are now entering a new chapter of deeper engagement and shared development goals, with the training of young diplomats forming part of a broader strategy for future cooperation.”

The upcoming diplomatic training is expected to be part of a larger strategic framework aimed at capacity building, international exchange, and long-term development. It underscores both nations’ mutual desire to sustain strong, forward-looking ties that contribute meaningfully to regional stability and global progress.
