Botswana to promote agro- tourism industry

Botswana has prioritized revival of the country’s tourism sector as it is eagerly awaiting the reopening of the economy after a lull caused by Covid-19, according to its President Dr. Mokgweetsi E. K Nasisi. In a social media post, the President said that the government would accelerate the initiatives aimed at stimulating local and regional tourism by inviting more investments in the sector.

Areas like agro tourism and land tourism will be promoted and more citizens can partake in that process to earn a living from tourism. He also assured that gradually the country would come out of the lockdown but told people to be cautious.

Another assurance given by the head of state was relating to greater importance to the private sector. The government, he said, would make strategic interventions to promote economic recovery through private sector participation. Government, he added, would move with speed to implement the amended Trade and Industrial Development Acts for the economic empowerment of the citizens.

Quoting the World Tourism Organization(WTO), President said the COVID–19 pandemic caused a 22% fall in international tourist arrivals in the first three months of 2020nleading to a decline of 60% to 80% in revenues. Botswana had to take a deep cut in the tourist arrivals because of the Covid-19, which had adversely affected the livelihood of many people. In order to revive Botswana’s tourism sector, the government would stimulate local and regional tourism by creating an enabling environment by increased investment in the tourism sector and facilitate citizens’ participation. The Agro Tourism guidelines are also being reviewed to facilitate citizens to make a decent living out of their farming avocations. Wildlife tourism also will be promoted, president assured.
