The Ministry of Health is convening with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and other development partners in Gaborone this week to validate Botswana’s National Food Safety Strategy. The workshop brings stakeholders together to strengthen the country’s food safety system, review priority areas and ensure alignment with global standards.
The session focuses on confirming the final elements of the strategy, assessing its consistency with international benchmarks, and refining the national Food Safety Action Plan. This validation process ensures that proposed policies are clear, practical and ready for implementation.
Building on earlier inception workshops and extensive stakeholder consultations, the strategy reflects input from government agencies, the private sector and civil society. It emphasizes public health protection, fair trade and consumer safety, while calling for stronger institutional coordination in food safety monitoring.
Once finalized, the strategy is expected to significantly enhance Botswana’s food safety system. Its objectives include protecting consumers from unsafe food, reducing contamination-related health risks and enabling safer trade in food and agricultural products. Stronger systems will help local producers meet Codex, World Health Organization, Southern African Development Community and national standards—improving access to regional and international markets.
The workshop also aims to identify gaps in enforcement and capacity, including challenges in inspection systems, inconsistent awareness among food handlers and consumers, and the need for modern tools, training and laboratory services. Addressing these issues will reinforce confidence in the national food control system.
