Botswana: Khawa Dune Challenge Ushers in New Era Under Private Sector Leadership

(3 Minutes Read)

The iconic Khawa Dune Challenge and Cultural Festival, a flagship event in Botswana’s motorsport and cultural tourism calendar, is poised for a transformative phase as Incepta Communications takes over its management and hosting from 2025 to 2027. This shift follows a strategic move by the Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO) to transition the event’s stewardship to private sector and specialist sports entities through a competitive tender process.

Initially planned for May, the 2025 edition has now been rescheduled to June 27–29, due to unforeseen logistical delays that hindered early preparations. The revised dates aim to ensure a smooth, well-coordinated event that delivers a high-impact experience.

Announcing the developments during a Tsabong District Council meeting, Chairman Elias Motlhanke reaffirmed the importance of the festival in advancing rural tourism and community upliftment. Since its inception in 2012, the Khawa Dune Challenge has boosted the local economy through income-generating avenues such as food stalls, traditional crafts, cultural performances, and various services. With Incepta Communications steering the event forward, it is expected to become even more dynamic and beneficial for the community.

Motlhanke emphasised that postponing the 2025 edition was necessary to ensure quality execution and effective stakeholder coordination. He noted that the additional preparation time would enhance logistics and allow all partners to contribute to a world-class event.

He also addressed recent administrative changes arising from the restructuring of national ministries, including the formation of a standalone Ministry of Art and Sport. While this transition has led to temporary disruptions, such as programming delays and staff reallocations, it reflects a broader shift aimed at enhancing service delivery.

Despite these challenges, Motlhanke celebrated a significant milestone in youth leadership. He announced that Oabona Jacobs, a young woman from Tsabong District, has been appointed to the Botswana National Youth Council Board by the Minister of Youth and Gender Affairs. Describing her as a capable and inspiring representative, he noted that Jacobs recently participated as a panellist and debater at the United Nations ECOSOC Youth Forum in New York this past April.

Motlhanke called on all local departments to support Jacobs in her new role, stressing that her appointment is not only a personal achievement but a strategic advancement for the region’s youth voice and leadership.
