Close on the heels of the EU ban on the import of South African citrus fruits, the restriction of South African farm products by Botswana and Namibia has adversely impacted South Africa’s exports of farm products.

Botswana and Namibia have banned certain fruits and vegetables from South Africa in a bid to protect their local farmers. From the beginning of this year, Botswana put a ban on imports from South Africa of tomatoes, carrots, beetroot, potatoes, cabbage, lettuce, garlic, onions, ginger, turmeric, chilli peppers, butternut, watermelons, sweet peppers, green mealies and fresh herbs.

South Africa has accused Namibia and Botswana of violating the trade agreements with South Africa and with the Southern African Customs Union (SACU). South Africa, Botswana, eSwatini, Lesotho, and Namibia are members of SACU which is an deal to have a common external trade border with free flow of goods within the union.
