He defeated 17 other candidates and scored total votes of 8,794,726. By scoring over 25 per cent of the votes cast in 30 states he met the constitutional requirement. To win the elections, the candidate has to score more than 24 states to be declared the winner. He won in Rivers, Borno, Jigawa, Zamfara, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Oyo and Ogun states.
The election results were declared by INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, in Abuja today. Atiku Abubakar of the PDP came second in the election winning a total of 6,984,520 votes. Peter Obi of the Labour Party with 6,101,533 votes came third in the election while Rabiu Kwankwaso of the NNPP came fourth with 1,496,687 votes.
Yakubu said a Certificate of Return for the President and Vice President will be presented at the National Collation Centre.
The opposition parties, the PDP and the LP have called for the cancellation of the results alleging that the elections were not fair and free. They accused INEC of its failure to upload the results of elections in the over 170,000 polling units onto a central server (IReV) as required by law, before the collation and announcement of results. They called for chairman of INEC, Mahmood Yakubu to step down alleging electoral irregularities and malpractices.
Nearly 90 million people were eligible to vote in Africa’s largest democracy. The winner, Bola Tinubu has served as two-term governor of Lagos, Nigeria’s economic capital. He has proved his credentials by raising the state’s revenue and it is hoped that he will replicate his success in Lagos on the national stage.
