US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated American commitment to global food security at the World Economic Forum being held in Davos, Switzerland. He spelled out various programs initiated by the US together with the African Union and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). A new initiative has been launched, called ‘Vision for Adapted Crops and Soils’ or VACS, which is a part of USAID’s flagship Feed the Future initiative.

The USAID project envisages two very basic things. First, investing above ground, identifying the indigenous African crops that are most nutritious and most resilient to climate change, improving these varieties, and delivering them to the world. Secondly, USAID is mapping, conserving, and building healthy soils that can help Africa grow the right crops.

The US Secretary of State termed these two approaches as the US’s comprehensive response to food shortages in the region. His address took place amidst the gathering of more than 60 heads of state and government, along with hundreds of business leaders, at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
