Cameroon has come under severe attack of swarms of granivorous birds in the millet fields causing huge losses to farmers. Losses have taken place in Logone and Chari in the far northern part of Cameroon. The birds have come from Lake Chad area.
Farmers complain that their yields would considerably come down due to the birds’ attack. There are some farmers who feel that their yield would be just halved, while a lot many seem to have left the millet fields in the lurch since they were not hopeful of getting any return from the area they had cultivated.
According to statistics from the Cooperation France-Cameroon (ACEFA), Sorghum or millet occupies 50% of the cultivable area in the far north of Cameroon. That is the region’s main crop and staple food. The attack on millets by the migratory birds will have an adverse effect, not only on the harvest and sales, but on the food supply of millions of people. This can lead to an unprecedented food crisis and inflation.
