Bill Gates Professes Future of AI: Flipside of AI Revolution Should Not be Ignored

Bill Gates admits he’s unsettled by the speed of change effected by Artificial Intelligence, particularly its capability to solve complex questions in the quickest possible way.

In an interview to a wire agency, the Microsoft cofounder said he’s astonished by how quickly AI is evolving, revealing that he tests it “multiple times a day” with increasingly complex questions.

His remarks echo both optimism and concerns about the unfolding times in human history. It foretells corporate to go for leaner teams as AI takes central stage, displacing man with machine. More complex coding will emerge in time to come threatening already existing jobs which the world perceives cannot be replaced.

There are estimates of job losses estimated by various agencies. For instance, Goldman Sachs researchers estimate that automation could replace the equivalent of 300 million full-time jobs worldwide. The toll will be on repetitive, rule-based tasks such as data entry or tele-sales, although whether AI will match human ingenuity remains to be a debatable point.

Amidst the mounting fears, there are certain segments that may not be impacted with the introduction of AI as much as others. Biologists are one among them. That profession will continue to be secure for the time being one of them. While AI can analyze genomes and identify disease patterns rapidly, scientific progress still depends on human intuition and curiosity.

Funding is another factor that AI alone can’t solve, Bill Gate said. AI could one day shorten the traditional 40-hour workweek. While experts debate whether general AI will emerge within years or decades, Gates’ warning is less about if disruption will happen, and more about how fast.In a world where yesterday’s essential skill can become obsolete by tomorrow, even the most adaptable workers may struggle to keep pace, Bill predicted.
