The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mrs Catriona Laing, has revealed that of late, the number of Nigerians applying for visas to the UK has increased several folds.

Several factors like family links with people of Nigerian origin in the UK, the English language, and desire to continue education, and recent policy changes by the UK government have made the UK, a preferred destination for Nigerian students. Now Nigerian students are allowed to remain and work in the UK for two years after completing their Master’s degree or PHD.

She added that the UK welcomes talented people for studies or work.  A lot of Nigerian medics, both nurses and doctors are employed in the National Health Service. Laing added that the UK faced labour shortage but needs to strike a balance to avoid a massive brain drain from Nigeria. She said that the UK government was in talks with the Nigerian government to avoid causing brain drain, particularly in the health sector.

Responding to the UK’s policy of sending asylum seekers to Rwanda, Laing said that the objective of the move that has been legally challenged was to facilitate migration in partnership with Rwanda. She said that several boats cross the channel loaded with migrants from many different countries coming towards the UK. These include genuine refugees fleeing civil war and persecution from countries like Syria Eritrea, South Sudan, etc.
