In Benin and Togo, drivers and customers are swapping gasoline-powered motorcycles for electric models that are environmentally friendly and less expensive.
There are thousands of electric motorcycles in several African countries, which do not pollute the environment. The number of units in Africa, that import parts of electric vehicles and assemble them locally is increasing, particularly in western African countries.
In Lomé, the capital of Togo, a number of new green electric motorcycles are plying. Electric vehicles have several advantages such as an oil change is not needed, no need to replace the engines and other parts, etc. However, frequent battery charging and change in the battery may pose challenges. To cut down the increasing pollution caused by the clogging of vehicles in most African cities and to prevent higher levels of carbon emissions, experts suggest switching over to electric vehicles. Recently concluded COP27 held in Egypt has underscored the need for switching over to electric vehicles globally to reduce the carbon footprint. Pollution is one of the leading causes of death and a major public health issue.
To motivate more people to use electric vehicles, proactive steps have to be taken. Foremost is the setting up of charging points along the roads to ensure a smooth rides over long distances. Drivers often find difficulties in spotting charging points en route, if by any chance the battery charging points are not available.

Local authorities also are encouraging the switch to electric vehicles. Many taxi drivers are being offered flexible credit or loan deals. Yet, switching over to electric vehicles may take time due to higher initial investments.
