Madagascar is in the grip of a major storm, which damaged several buildings and roads and rendered hundreds homeless. Steps are being taken for supplying food, medicines and other essential goods to the people living in affected areas, according to Madagascar’s Prime Minister Christian Ntsay. He had taken an aerial view of the affected areas, particularly Soalala, where loses are more compared to other regions, to assess the damage.
According to unconfirmed reports, 80% of the Soalala’s inhabitants were affected due to sudden flooding and strong winds. The roofs of the houses were swept away in the strong winds and several houses collapsed. The roads are inundated and traffic had come to a grinding halt on account of Belna (name of the tropical storm). Metrological department has warned that the rains and storms may continue for a day or two, though the intensity of the storm has been downgraded. Exact quantum of damages caused to the island nation has to be determined since there are reports that it might lead to heavy cancellation/postponement of tourist arrivals.
