King Phillippe of Belgium along with Queen Mathilde to South Africa is on a visit to South Africa, where they held discussions with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. The royal entourage included Belgian foreign minister Hadja Lahbib. An important plea made by King Philippe was the intervention of South Africa in resolving the war between Russia and Ukraine.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa assured that his country would continue to use its clout with Russia to find a viable solution to the continuing problem that has affected almost all countries.
South Africa maintained neutrality so far in the ongoing war, refusing to align with either country, despite heavy international pressure to take a stand. Like a few other countries in the continent, South Africa abstained from voting on the motion, when it came before the UN General Assembly.

The plea from Belgium King is pertinent to intervene in resolving the Russia-Ukraine war since it is aired at a time when South Africa is due to host BRICS summit, a grouping of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Russian President Vladimir Putin is likely to attend the meeting. The new relationship between South Africa, Russia, and China and the recently held joint military exercise did not go well with the Western countries including the US. Of late, a spate of delegations from the developed world visited African countries including South Africa, to bring them to their fold.
