The Beeline Telecoms Limited has bagged the fourth license awarded by the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA). Beeline is a wholly Zambian owned company. It is required to commence operations within six months failing that the national service license will be revoked.
While granting the license, the authority said that the reason to introduce a fourth mobile operator was taken after conducting an analysis of the ICT sector market from the perspective of the quality of services being offered by the incumbent licensees. This would also enhance competition among market players. The authority invited requests for proposals and applications for a network license under the international market segment and for a service license under the national market segment. The authority awarded the license to the Beeline after doing due diligence and the network meeting minimum conditions.
On September 4, 2018, ZICTA, under the guidance of the Ministry of Transport and Communications issued a network license under the international market segment and a service license under the national market segment to UZI Zambia. However, UZI Zambia failed to commence operations by March 3, 2019 which was the final deadline issued by the authority. Earlier also the UZI Zambia accorded deadline extensions to UZI Zambia, the first being November 30, 2019 and the second May 30, 2020.
