Austrian start-up Neulandt has entered the Kenyan low-cost housing market with alternative building technology. The company has introduced its portable precast plant for building affordable housing. Managing director Marco Romahn has invited interested firms that can be provided with the technology and infrastructure.

Romahn said the model house is priced at Sh26,000 per square meter. The plant he claimed can build up to 1,000 single-storey or multi-storey houses per year. He observed that the proposed plan can transform Kenya to be a leader in the East African region in the low-cost building construction industry.

Housing Principal Secretary of Kenya Charles Hinga said that affordable housing was one of the four pillars under President Uhuru Kenyatta’s flagship Big Four agenda. Under the affordable housing plans, the government proposes to construct 200,000 homes annually. He urged real estate players to support the government in this mission and adopt cheaper building global technologies to provide low-cost housing options for Kenyans. The real estate sector remains a potential sector for growth for investors as Kenya has a housing deficit that increases at 250,000 units annually.
