The African Union (AU) called for the restoration of civilian rule in Chad. General Mahamat Idriss Déby took over as the president last week upon the death of his father Idriss Déby Itno.

However, the AU Peace and Security Council, which addresses the security issues  of the continent , expressed its “grave concern” over the development, particularly the establishment of a military council headed by the son of the late president. There is a general feeling that military councils and their interference in the governing structure would go against the spirit of democracy.

Idriss Déby Itno, 68 died last week as a result of wounds sustained while visiting a frontline area where  the national army was confronting the militants in the north of the country. The regime of Idriss Déby had the tacit support of its ex-colonizer France, as an essential partner in the war against jihadists in the Sahel region.

French President Emmanuel Macron, attended the funeral services of deceased president. He wanted the new government   to promote stability, inclusion, dialogue and democratic transition. In the meantime, Mahamat Idriss Déby, 37, dissolved the national assembly and government. However, he promised new institutions after “free and democratic” elections in a year and a half. The AU Peace and Security Council waited till the funeral to put in public domain its communiqué urging restoration of civilian rule in the country. European countries including France have a strategic interest in the Sahel region on account of the growing tension in the region. In the meantime, the opposition parties in Chad called upon France to keep away from the internal matters of the Central African country.
