President of Senegal and the African Union, Macky Sall, said that Africa must learn to feed itself, laying emphasis on achieving food security. This, he said, while addressing the Agriculture Summit with the theme ‘Feed Africa: Food Sovereignty and Resilience’, co-organized by the African Development Bank -AfDB in Dakar recently.
Sall underscored at the summit, which had the presence of several African heads of state, that to transform the potential into a reality, Africa should allocate at least 10% of the national budget to the agricultural sector. Others who were present at the summit included heads of state of Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Mauritania, and Zambia. They emphasised the importance of food security for the political stability and security of their nations. An estimated 283 million Africans are hungry as the continent is home to a third of the world’s 850 million people living with hunger.

AfDB Group President, Dr. Akinwumi A. Adesina said that the Dakar II Summit would mobilise political commitment, development partners and private sector investment to achieve food sovereignty and resilience for the entire continent. Kenyan president William Ruto called for more action saying the continent has been lagging behind for far too long in ensuring food security. The three-day Summit in Diamniadio, near Dakar, the capital city of Senegal, will end today and a comprehensive pan-African action plan will be prepared.
