AU chairperson meets World Bank President to discuss pan-Africa economic issues

During the discussion, the former   reiterated his request that the institution should support African and other developing countries through the special drawing rights system

 

 

Senegalese President Macky Sall , chairperson of African Union (AU) met  World Bank president David Malpass on the second day of the World Water Forum. During the discussion, the former   reiterated his request that the institution should support African and other developing countries through the special drawing rights system.

The world Water forum kicked off in Dakar, capital of Senegal.  The officials discussed challenges and solutions to address water crisis. The chairperson pointed out during the parleys with the World President he took up issues that Africa faced. He said that the continent was facing  a three-dimensional crisis of economic backwardness, poverty and onslaught of pandemic. Sall reiterated his request that Africa be granted funds through the special drawing rights system (SDRs), which is a  system created by the IMF to supplement its member countries’ official reserves.

The international community had agreed to provide Africa  a US$33 billion out of a US$650 billion  post-covid scheme. The African Union made it clear that the allocated funds were insufficient to meet the huge challenges being faced by the countries in the region.

At the meeting of the World Water Forum, which is in progress at Dakar, international institutions, NGOs and business leaders continued to work on the framing of a coordinated action on major water and sanitation issues. World water Day was celebrated during the 9th World Water forum. This is the first time that Forum is meeting in a Sub-Saharan African country.
