The African Union has appointed Jean Kaseya as Director-General of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
CDC of Africa with its headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia was set up with the objective of supporting public health initiatives of member states by strengthening the capacity of their public health institutions. It also provides support to strengthen capacity in public health infrastructure, human resource capacity, disease surveillance, laboratory diagnostics, and preparedness and response to health emergencies and disasters. The primary mandate of CDC includes surveillance to detect potential disease threats from informal, non-structured sources that surface outside the official health sector. The other mandates include providing support to member states to address gaps in international health regulation compliance and public health emergency preparedness and response.

Kaseya from the Democratic Republic of Congo will serve as DG for a period of 4 years and will ensure the delivery of the core functions and key objectives of the organization as per its statute. He will also be responsible for the timely conception and implementation of programs for the regional collaborating centers.
