According to the most recent report from the central bank on financial inclusion indicators, Mozambique had 11 ATMs per 100,000 adults in 2019, but since then, the number has been falling, reaching 2024 lows with a total of 1,413 ATMs in the country, the equivalent of a coverage of 7.4 machines per 100,000 adults.

ATM coverage in Mozambique fell again in the first quarter of 2025, to 7.2 machines per 100,000 adults, renewing historic lows, according to data from the central bank consulted today by the Lusa news agency.

According to the most recent report from the central bank on financial inclusion indicators, Mozambique had 11 ATMs per 100,000 adults in 2019, but since then, the number has been falling, reaching 2024 lows with a total of 1,413 ATMs in the country, the equivalent to a coverage of 7.4 machines per 100,000 adults.

In the first quarter of this year, coverage fell again, to 7.2 machines per 100,000 adults, and 1,395 in total. The same trend, given the growth in payments and transfers through digital wallets, via mobile phones, is seen in POS payment terminals, whose coverage was just over 229 per 100,000 adults in 2019, falling every year to 190 by the end of 2024, totalling 35,470 across the country.

In the first quarter of this year, POS payment terminals’ total fell again, to 35,145, with coverage then standing at 181.5 per 100,000 inhabitants. Data from the central bank indicate that 15 commercial banks and 12 micro-banks operate in Mozambique, in addition to credit cooperatives and savings and credit organisations, among others.
