Arab League permanent members held an emergency meeting in Cairo to discuss the fighting in Sudan on 1st May, wherein Egypt’s deputy permanent representative to the League outlined a draft resolution to halt the fighting. The resolution called for an immediate and comprehensive cessation of conflict. It also called on all conflicting parties to initiate their efforts to give priority to the Sudanese people and stop the bloodshed. This, the resolution highlighted, was a prerequisite for returning to political dialogue.

The conflict had a heavy toll on men and properties, besides innumerable suffering caused to ordinary people. It is reported that at least 528 people have been killed and over  4,600 people wounded in the violence between the army and Sudan’s paramilitary group RSF. Some 50,000 people fled the country to seek refuge mostly in the Republic of Chad. Relief agencies said that they required immediate release of humanitarian aid to feed and nurse those people.

Martin Griffiths, a top UN humanitarian official, explained the high transportation cost involved in moving relief materials to the affected areas. He said that those goods should be transported at the earliest before the onset of the heavy rainy season, to avoid possible logistics hiccups. International pressure is being exerted to end the conflict. But despite the truce, reports are there that the fighting was still continuing in some pockets. Apprehensions were expressed from several quarters that once the evacuation of foreigners from Sudan was over, there was a possibility of fighting to escalate.

In the meantime, The United Nations’ World Food Programme announced that it would promptly end the suspension of its operations in Sudan, following the loss of one of its team members. The agency has been undertaking life-saving assistance to the victims of war, who got affected.  The agency, on 16 April, had temporarily halted all operations in Sudan after three of its employees were killed in clashes between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
