Electricity tariff has been hiked once again in Zimbabwe. The National
power utility Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) has
announced the new tariff, which has taken effect   from  1st of March,
2020. The move has cast further burden on the hard- pressed citizens,
who are reeling under hype inflation, unemployment and scarcity of
essential goods.

Zesa’s subsidiary company- the Zimbabwe Electricity Distribution
Company (ZETDC)-maintains that   the increase was on account of the
exchange rate and inflation.

ZETDC says it  has adjusted the electricity tariffs by 19.02% and the
increase in tariff  was in accordance  with the Tariff Award of 2
October 2019, which approved implementation of monthly tariff
indexation formula that takes into account the movement of
macroeconomic fundamentals, such as exchange rate and inflation for
changes above 10%.

Any electricity purchased beyond the 200 units will now cost ZWL$4.61
up from ZWL$3.87 per kWh. Zimbabwe has been battling an electricity
shortage due to low water levels at Kariba Dam and foreign currency
shortages among other issues.
