Angolan Tourism Minister Calls for Stronger African Cooperation to Transform the Continent’s Tourism Sector

(3 Minutes Read)

Angola’s Tourism Minister Márcio Daniel has urged African nations to strengthen cooperation and strategic investment to transform tourism across the continent. Speaking during a high-level panel discussion in Brussels, Belgium, the minister emphasized that collaboration—rather than competition—should guide Africa’s approach to tourism development.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Tourism , Márcio Daniel highlighted the need to invest in infrastructure and connectivity as key pillars for advancing the sector. Participating in the Global Tourism Forum’s annual meeting, at a session titled “Africa Ascending – Tourism for Infrastructure, Youth Employment & Investment,” he stressed that “Africa must move beyond the logic of competition and embrace cooperation among nations, building on regional success stories.”

“The time for cooperation has come,” he declared. “We must learn from one another and form a strong bloc that positions Africa as a leading global destination.” The minister also underlined that the true measure of success in attracting foreign investment lies in ensuring that profits are reinvested locally to generate employment and sustain growth.

Highlighting Angola’s progress, Márcio Daniel pointed to the country’s national tourism development strategy, which is supported by major structural projects—including the newly operational Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport, the Convention Center under construction in Luanda, and the Lobito Corridor. These initiatives, he noted, will strengthen regional integration, boost tourism, and attract foreign direct investment.

The panel discussion, moderated by Abulfas Garayev, former Minister of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan (2006–2018), also featured Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathy, and Mozambique’s Secretary of State for Tourism, Fredson Bacar. Both speakers addressed the importance of connectivity and public transportation as critical factors for tourist mobility and community inclusion.

While in Brussels, Márcio Daniel also held a bilateral meeting with his Egyptian counterpart, Sherif Fathy. The meeting, held on the sidelines of the Global Tourism Forum 2025, aimed to strengthen tourism cooperation between Angola and Egypt, following Angolan President João Lourenço’s official visit to Cairo earlier this year at the invitation of Egyptian President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi.
