Unrest in Angola, triggered by high prices, particularly fuel, is under control. While thanking security forces for controlling the unrest, President Joao Lourenco avoided the subject of fuel price hikes as he addressed the country for the first time since the outbreak of deadly unrest. He blamed the violence on irresponsible citizens manipulated by ‘unpatriotic organisations.
At least 30 people were killed as security forces confronted demonstrators, while defending them, saying it was necessary to restore order. Several human rights groups have accused the security forces of high-handedness. They blamed the police and the government for the ‘killing of defenceless people’ trying to express themselves.
