In Angola, water sports, such as kayaking are becoming popular, which can be a great tourist attraction. This is good news for traditional boat makers. The traditional boats are made by a small-time company – Rukka, which specialises in building such boats. The renewed interest, combined with limitations in global supply chains, can give domestic production a boost.
Presently, Rukka is a small business, employing five people and making boats known as kayaks locally to order. However, it has ambitious plans for growth and to diversify its products. The small-time company is looking to build boats for things like artisanal fishing. The present factory of Rukka is almost obsolete and small. It is now drawing plans to develop a land mass measuring 15,000 square meters for a proper factory.

Rukka is currently meeting local needs. It will play an important role in promoting sport and tourism with its equipment and products. It has plans to work with sports federations and clubs to promote water sports as a major recreational avenue. The pandemic has triggered other businesses also in the country, which was primarily known for its oil and diamonds.
